In the serene hills of Assisi, the birthplace of St. Francis, reflection and compassion have long found a home. On 8–9 October 2025, this historic town once again became a meeting point for reflection and action as the Palazzo dei Priori hosted the Festival delle Creature, one of Italy’s most significant academic gatherings on animal ethics. The festival brought together scientists, policymakers, cultural figures, and advocates to examine how they can move beyond viewing animals as marginal to human concerns and instead recognise them as beings with essential value.
Our founder, Wolfgang, spent a week in Assisi accompanying Natascha from Pro Animale Germany, who was invited as a keynote speaker. Wolfgang’s visit had a dual purpose: to support Natascha in her important role at the festival and to build connections for our ethical olive wood products, which we are excited to share more about soon. With our station in Assisi, Sorriso di San Francesco (St. Francis’s Smile), the experience felt very much like a return to a second home.
The festival offered an inspiring programme for anyone committed to animal welfare. Dedicated to Jane Goodall, it featured thoughtful panel discussions held in the beautiful Sala della Conciliazione. Local artist Francesca De Mai transformed the town hall with magnificent animal sculptures, a powerful reminder that animals deserve a visible and respected place in our public spaces and political conversations. All sessions were streamed online free of charge, and organisers made substantial efforts to provide English interpretation, enabling international participants to engage with the content and spirit of the event.
Several moments stood out. Wolfgang visited the Pro Animale station to connect with colleagues and partners. Natascha led an engaging guided tour for a group of Swiss schoolchildren visiting Assisi, introducing them to the principles of animal welfare in a way that was both age-appropriate and deeply inspiring. The active support of local Assisi authorities underscored the city’s commitment to its identity as a City of Peace, extending that ethic of peace and respect to our relationships with animals.
For those who care about combining knowledge, empathy, and responsible action, the Festival delle Creature offers an important space for dialogue and progress. Recordings of the sessions are available at the official site of the festival, and we encourage you to explore them.
Assisi today is not only a destination for spiritual pilgrims; it is also a gathering place for those seeking to reimagine our relationship with animals. We look forward to welcoming more of you into this growing community of compassionate advocates.
