Greyhound Racing Days Are Numbered in Wentworth Park (Australia)

Great news for greyhounds from Downunder too after Scotland – the New South Wales Government has announced that racing at Wentworth Park will wrap up by 2027, paving the way for community parklands and sporting grounds. This decision marks a real triumph after years of dedicated campaigning by advocates and locals alike.

A long fight eventually paid off as campaigners have pushed hard against the cruelty at Wentworth Park, one of NSW’s deadliest tracks for greyhounds. Senator Mehreen Faruqi, Greens Deputy Leader and Animal Welfare spokesperson, called it “a big win for so many of us who have campaigned for years to shut down this death track where greyhounds are killed, maimed and injured at the altar of gambling and racing”.

Greyhound, not racing.

This closure signals the beginning of the end of greyhound racing in Sydney and New South Wales, as people turn away from what Faruqi describes as “gambling-fuelled cruelty” subsidized by tax dollars. Pressure truly works, proving governments can shift course when communities unite.

Returning Wentworth Park to public use attracted great support and appreciation from the local community, who recently enjoyed the place for a picnic instead of a race.

With more apartments on the horizon, green spaces like this are vital for families and fitness enthusiasts. Imagine kids playing where dogs once chased lures—now that’s progress worth celebrating.

However, this is not the end of this matter probably, as Greens urge a full phase-out, including reskilling workers, rehoming greyhounds, and repurposing tracks into community assets. They’re also pressing for the delayed Drake Report, arguing every day of silence props up an industry that’s lost its social license.

At my Tikkun we celebrate every animal rescued. Let’s keep the momentum going until racing is past worldwide!
