Bob’s Loyalty: A Dog’s Decade by His Owner’s Grave Changes the Law

A heartwarming story from São Paulo has touched many: a devoted dog named Bob lived for ten years in a cemetery by his late owner João Aparecido da Silva’s grave, inspiring a new state law to allow pets to be buried with their humans.

João adopted the straydog Bob, and when João died of cancer in 2013, the dog refused to leave the gravesite. Cemetery staff cared for him with food and shelter, moved by how he guarded the spot, chased off intruders, and welcomed friends with gentle nudges—earning his own chair in the process.

Bob passed away in 2023 at about 16 years old, prompting a community funeral procession. His unwavering loyalty gained widespread attention, leading São Paulo’s assembly to legislate in January 2026 permitting pet burials in public cemeteries alongside owners—a meaningful step forward.

This simple yet profound tale highlights the deep connections we share with animals. We’re grateful to the BBC for bringing Bob’s legacy to light, reminding us to honor such bonds through better protections.
