The other day I attended a Café philosophique in Budapest that was held in a small community garden right in the middle of the city’s famous party district. Hidden between bars, traffic, and nightlife, the garden had a touch of a small counterworld, a quiet place for reflection and conversation surrounded by plants and insects, embraced by the buzzing [no pun intended, read below why ^] vibe of the VIst district’s genius loci.
The topic of the evening was culture. Besides other aspects we looked at differences and similarities between culture and civilization. Two words that at times tend to be used as if they meant the same thing. Despite them meaning rather different, yet related things – as we came to touch upon.
During the discussion, I also learned about the UrbanBEE project, an international citizen science initiative researching how cities can become safer habitats for wild pollinators. People participate by placing small bee hotels – which the project provides – in gardens, balconies, and urban green spaces, helping researchers better understand how solitary bees adapt to city life.
I shall say another nice example of how everyone can make a difference – even if just a small one at a time.
