Glossary of Implications is a visual poem part of Tabula Impressa, a project we presented on
occasion of the IIIrd CEENASWE Conference in Szeged, 2018. Tabula Impressa is an ongoing
project started in 2011, based on a collection of signs photographed on the streets and
pavements of London. These marks, pointing to impending maintenance works, were
deprived of their functional meaning and became the source for a new code and system of
interpretation. Composed by several bodies of works, Tabula Impressa is inspired by what
Jung described as ‘collective unconscious’, for which man is not born as a blank canvas
(tabula rasa) but carries in his subconscious elements from a communal, ancestral
background.
The video-work Glossary of Implications investigates the nature of symbols,
questioning the everchanging meaning of words and images in regards to their belonging to
a specific narrative or visual vocabulary. Using three keywords as a cue – represent, harmos,
and self – it is a reflection upon man’s eternal quest to make sense of the outside world and
inner reality, and his effort to describe life objectively but, at the same time, assert his own
perception of it. The video features some of the imagery of Tabula Impressa: some from the
collection of Apocriphisms (a group of small size, icon-like paintings of signs compositions)
and a selection of circular signs in their raw state, used to create Harmos, one of ten categories
of the work Cache, in its turn an inventory of the different typologies of encountered signs.
